Falling in Love at Barcelona Opera

October 14th, 2009 Posted in Travel Tags: , ,

This is my second year of college and I am a music major and am going to graduate with a performance degree in clarinet. I play for the university orchestra and also in one of its small wind and wood group. I love the clarinet and have played it since I was seven. I really hope that I’m good enough to be able to have a career in an orchestra, or maybe even get into virtuoso solo playing. Of course that sounds a bit grandiose, but one can always dream, and I always do.

Last semester our orchestra won a place in a college orchestra competition and we were invited to Barcelona, Spain to play in the finals. It so exciting, on all levels. Plus I had enormous crush on one of the violinists and couldn’t wait for the chance to spend some time with her in Barcelona. Unfortunately for me she had been designated as the concertmaster last semester and I was afraid that might have sent her ego through the rough. I mean, violinists are already the self appointed prima donnas of the orchestra, so this really had to go to her head, precious and pretty as it is.

Barcelona was incredible. The city is beautiful and would have been a great trip even without the competition concert and the presence of my crush, Jenny. Luckily for me, I am old enough to go to the clubs and really had a great time one night with the flute players. Best of all though, I was able to get tickets for a production of Verdi’s Aida at the Gran Teatre del Liceu and mentioned to Jenny that I happened to have them and asked if she’d be interested in going. Well, I knew that was a sure thing because she loves that opera. Sure enough, she accepted and I can’t describe how beautiful she, the opera and the theatre were. And the best part, she initiated a kiss when we were saying goodnight at the Barcelona Spain hotel.
