Refreshed is an excellent way to see Delhi. It is enormously complex, beautiful and baffling all at once, and offers amazing new adventures for travelers. There are always plenty of attractions in Delhi, from the temples to the shopping malls, and something that will surely attract the attention of visitors of any age. There are also magnificent performance traditions here, ranging from traditional variations on old art forms, to extremely contemporary new approaches to existing styles and techniques. There is also a great porosity here between cultures, both within and outside of India. This is especially true in the eclectic and fascinating life of theater-maker Khalid Tyabji.
He began his work in theatre at the University of Delhi, and had a good career as Administrative Director, but there was something in the Grotowski workshops that caught his attention and haunted him enough to leave his post, and travel around central India, giving workshops and working with Indian aboriginals in forms of theatre/communication without text. This became the basis for a one-man show, General Tomfoolery, which he performed around the world. The Polish connection never left him, and Tyabji travels back and forth to collaborate with Jolanta Cynkutis, developing new projects and working on translations of the writings of her dead husband, the great theatre director Zbigniew Cynkutis. As if that weren’t enough, he has also appeared in several films, including Mira Nair’s Kama Sutra. And the story continues to unfold, like a performance piece in the middle of the Polish forest.
